Sevenoaks residents warned about phone scam by Kent Police
13:48, 04 November 2016
Police are warning residents to be wary of people demanding money over the phone.
Officers have received reports of people falsely claiming to be police and calling Sevenoaks residents.
In each reported case, the caller has claimed to be a member of the Metropolitan Police.
The victims have been told that they are the victim of fraud, and have been instructed to withdraw a large amount of money from their bank account.
Once the money has been withdrawn, the scammer calls back and tells them to read out serial numbers of the notes before telling them the notes are fake.
They then inform the victim that a courier will be sent over to collect the money.
In each of the reports the victims, who have been elderly, have handed over a large quantity of money.
A police force will never ask a member of the public for their bank details, or money, over the phone.
Police are warning that if you receive one of these calls, end it immediately and wait at least five minutes before using your phone to ensure the line has cleared.
If you have information on these calls, contact Kent Police on 101, or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
