Environmental protesters faked being dead as part of a demonstration outside shops this lunchtime.

Campaigners took part in the "die-in" in Bligh's Court Sevenoaks, outside shops including Laura Ashley, upmarket children's shop Jojo Maman Bebe and Accessorize.

Mother-of-three Laura Clout and her children were among more than 20 protesters to gather at the scene.

The former freelance journalist said: "As a a mother I'm really frightened my children won't live out the rest of their natural lives as a result of climate change.

"The government is doing so little to reduce carbon emissions. Starvation in Europe is something that could happen within my lifetime."

The 40-year-old said she had only started protesting two months ago and has visited London with her children as part of the Extinction Rebellion protest.

She said: "Me and my sister were up there with our marigolds cleaning the chalk off Marble Arch. There's been a real concerted effort to clean up after each of the protests.

"Today went really well, we chose Bligh's Court as the road is wider and we didn't want to cause any disruption.

"People were walking past and looking at what we we're doing, I heard some children ask their parents why we were there."

The 25-minute protest in Sevenoaks is part of an international event organised by Extinction Rebellion.

The event's page reads: "The die-in is a form of non-violent resistance. In doing so, demonstrators lay on the ground in public 'as if dead', in order to demonstrate that our current situation is life-threatening. Afterwards we rise up together and celebrate life... and the rebellion."
