The Environment Agency has released flood alerts for the River Medway after a huge amount of rainfall over the past 24 hours.

The alert covers a stretch running from Forest Row to Penshurst after 40mm of rain has hit the county since yesterday evening.

This has led to water levels in the river to rise overnight and they are continued to rise throughout today.

Flooding of field and low lying land in the surrounding areas is expected along with a considerable amount of surface water flooding.

On its website the Environment Agency posted a statement that reads: "Further light rain is forecast throughout today and expected to clear by early afternoon.

"Flooding of property is not expected at this stage. We will continue to monitor river levels and update this message if the situation changes."
