A primary school in Edenbridge has had to close just four days after welcoming pupils back because of overrunning roadworks blocking the entrance.

Parents at Hever Church of England Primary School unexpectedly received a text this morning telling them not to bring their children in as the road is unsafe.

The text from assistant headteacher Mrs Draper said: "Hever Road has been closed in both directions by the highways agency and the road is NOT safe to drive on.

"Please DO NOT make your way to school at present, we are contacting the Highways Agency and KCC (Kent County Council) to clarify the situation and will communicate as soon as we know the outcome."

The school opposite King Henry VIII pub reopened on Thursday for the first time since lockdown.

Some parents expressed their frustration on Twitter asking Kent Highways why the work was not carried out when the school was closed during lockdown.

A Kent County Council spokesman said: “KCC Highways managers have apologised to the headteacher of Hever Primary School for the circumstances that led to the school being unable to open this morning.

"The carriageway repairs are part of our planned overnight programme and the road was due to be re-opened this morning. "Unfortunately, the signs were not removed prior to the school opening, which has resulted in the school being unable to open as planned.

"We would like to assure the school, parents and pupils that the work will be completed tonight and that access to the school will be available tomorrow morning.”
