The driver of a road sweeper has been flown to hospital with serious injuries after a crash involving a lorry which was transporting a crane.
The vehicles collided on the anticlockwise carriageway of the M25 between Junction 5 for the M26 and Junction 4 for Orpington just after 5am.
Four fire crews attended and cut the driver from the wreckage.
The carriageway was closed for around 19 hours so officers investigate the circumstances and emergency repairs could be carried out.
Traffic was also held on the clockwise carriageway so the air ambulance could land.
That route reopened just after 8am but one lane remained closed.
A diversion is in place via the A21, A25 and the A224 through Sevenoaks and Badgers Mount.
Motorists are advised to expect delays and, where possible, use alternative routes.
Witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident is urged to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01622 798538 quoting reference HW/SW/84/20.
