A warning has been issued to people in Sevenoaks after a trend of convincing-looking tickets accusing drivers of "selfish parking" appearing on cars.

The notices, which are titled 'Persistent Parking Violation', feature the district council's logo but claim to be from "the residents of Argyle Road", insisting so-called offenders' details have been given to the correct authorities.

The ticket adds: "The residents of this road have to pay to park here on an annual basis; for each car that is registered in this street, a parking permit must be attached to it.

"What gives you the right to park here for free just to go shopping, to drop off your children, when you are allowed to park in the Southpark car park or for work?"

It then goes on to list the available facilities in the town before warning that details of those who take part in "selfish parking" will be named and shamed on social media.

Authors of the notice then claim that spaces on the road are needed by parents, the elderly, those suffering from illness and the disabled.

However, a line at the bottom of the ticket reads: "If you're visiting family or friends down this road, please ignore this notice and accept our apologies for placing this parking notice on your vehicle."

In response to the reports, a district council spokesman said: "Some people in Sevenoaks town may have seen this fake ticket appearing on their cars this week.

"Please be reassured that this is not from us and we do not endorse it.

"Time-limited on-street parking is allowed on many roads in the town for the benefit of local businesses, visitors, people on the school run, churchgoers and so on.

"This achieves a balance of the needs of local residents and others going about their business."

The council added that a consultation on street parking in the borough is being run, and regular users can have their say here.
