MIKE Conway put in a solid performance at the high-speed Thruxton track to stay hot on the heels of British Formula 3 Championship leader Marko Asmer.

After securing a podium finish at Scotland's Knockhill circuit, the Sevenoaks man finished fourth and sixth in Hampshire.

It leaves him joint second in the standings with the Portuguese Alvaro Parente, five points behind the Estonian Asmer at the top.

Conway started the first of the races second on the grid, but although he kept his place from the start he was later passed by Asmer and Christian Bakkerud to finish fourth.

In the second race he maintained a sixth-placed qualifying position.

He said: "I didn’t quite have the set-up right on the car. But at least I finished ahead of Parente [fifth] so was able to pull back the gap to him in the points.

"From sixth on the grid in race two, it was always going to be a tough race. I got squeezed into the Complex after climbing to third and that really screwed me up because I lost three places when I was pushed out on the left-hander.

"After that, I was always trying to fight back from sixth when I should have had third."

The next British F3 round is at Wiltshire’s Castle Combe circuit on June 25 and 26, but first Conway will head to Dutch track Zandvoort for the Marlboro Masters of F3 event.

The two international races will take place on Sunday, June 12.
