Meteorologist reveals 2013 had wettest day in 20 years
00:01, 31 December 2013
An amateur meteorologist recorded the wettest day in more than 20 years in 2013.
However, Ken Beal, who measures rainfall from his home in Eastchurch, says overall it amazingly wasn’t a particularly damp year.
He recorded around 525mm of the wet stuff over the whole 12 months – the average is around 520mm.
In 2012 there was a total of 750mm, which was the highest in almost two decades.
October was the wettest month of 2013, with 135.8mm.
Although that isn’t the most that has ever fallen in that month (around 170mm fell in 2000), October 2013 did see the dampest day since Mr Beal started measuring rainfall on behalf of the Environment Agency in 1994.
On Saturday, October 12, there was 73mm of rain.
The previous record for a single day was 54mm, which was in July 2012.
In December it might have felt like it didn’t stop raining, but in fact there was 52.5mm over the month (not including Monday and New Year’s Eve), which is nowhere near the 84.5mm which fell during the 12th month of 2012.
The few days last week when it seemed particularly damp there was actually only 15mm recorded.
However, Sunday, December 15, was quite wet, as 15.6mm fell.
In January 2013 there was 40.3mm; February was unusually dry, with 14.5mm; 40mm fell in March; there was 28.9mm in April, 44.7mm in May, 8.4mm in June and 25.9mm in July; August was quite wet, which is not unusual with 42.9mm; 39mm fell in September; and 55.1mm fell in November.
The 84-year-old said: “Although it appears very wet it’s not as wet as it seemed. It’s just been so miserable.
“We had nowhere near as much rain in 2013 as 2012, but it all came in the last three months.
“It had been quite dry up to October. It’s that which made it seem so wet because it hangs around for weeks [at that time of year].
“The weather has been odd for two years now, so let’s hope it’s a bit better and less windy in 2014.”
