Neighbours are becoming increasingly concerned at the mess created by housing development works.

Ann Lewis, who has lived in Admirals Walk in Halfway for 11 years, says road conditions can be dangerous after lorries pass through to the building site.

Malro Homes is building 31 properties on what used to be part of Minster College after the scheme was granted permission by Swale council in September.

It was recommended for approval by officers and the planning committee gave it the go-ahead by eight votes to six.

Now 85-year-old Mrs Lewis says the area is becoming hazardous as kerb stones have been damaged by HGVs.

She said: “As you turn in to Admirals Walk from Banner Way, they have lorries going up on the pavement and taking the kerb up and they’ve left it.

“It could kill someone like if a cyclist or motorbike rode past there, hit the broken kerb stones and came off.

“The lorries have blocked people in and drive in to the site by reversing down the road to tip the stuff they carry.

“I don’t think they’ve been down to see what it’s like.

“I may be old and have two and a half feet in the grave but this is a disgrace.”

Richard Higgins, another resident who campaigned against the development, said: “I know a few people that have complained about the road because we’re dragging the mud up our drives and indoors.

“They’re busting all the kerbs, the road is all breaking up. They’ve already repaired the kerb once. Further along the road is going again, there are potholes.”

Mrs Lewis wrote to highways officers to take up the issue but approached Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP Gordon Henderson when she did not get a response.

Simon Jones, director for highways, transportation and waste at Kent County Council, confirmed a footpath had been mended in an email replying to Mr Henderson.

He added: “We previously raised concerns over the housing development due to the lack of parking within the site. The developer has subsequently amended its plans.”

Malro Homes has not yet responded to requests for comment.
