Proposals to build around 30 homes on “surplus” school land have been criticised because of their potential impact on traffic.

Leaflets were dropped through letterboxes in Halfway last week inviting comments on Kent County Council proposals to build over land to the north-west of Oasis Academy Isle of Sheppey’s Minster Road site, which is currently a car park.

Residents are being consulted and no planning application has been submitted yet. Access would be via the dead end in Admirals Walk.

As well as the three, two-bedroom and 28, three-bedroom properties the council is seeking outline permission for, there would also be 65 parking spaces and individual gardens.

A pedestrian walkway would go from the development to the neighbouring school.

The site is allocated for housing in Swale council’s draft Local Plan and the leaflet says the project would help the local authority to meet the government’s requirements for housing demand in the borough.

The secretary of Halfway Residents’ Association, Paul Hutchinson, who lives on nearby Highfield Road, has replied to the consultation to object to the proposals.

He raised concerns the already “overstressed” infrastructure in the village, which often sees Banner Way, Admirals Walk, Highfield Road and other roads used as a rat run at peak times, would be exacerbated by the additional vehicles.

He added the Banner Way and Admirals Walk junction is a bottleneck and it is “inconceivable” that it would be able to cope with the extra vehicles.

Mick Galvin, vice-chairman of the residents’ association, also criticised the proposals.

He said: “Another housing plan with no thought or consideration to Halfway residents. The leaflet also states ‘good access to existing community facilities’. What facilities? Certainly no doctors, dentist.

“Typical council, shafting Halfway again. More houses, no infrastructure to support it.”
