Leysdown’s bandstand project is getting closer to completion thanks to the help of volunteers.

The 90sq metre structure is already in position at The Spinney, a patch of green opposite the amusements in The Promenade.

Now trainees at contractor Carillion and inmates from HMP Standford Hill, Eastchurch, are laying bricks around the perimeter free of charge to help cut the scheme’s overall cost.

Work started before Christmas and so far the prisoners have laid footings and the concrete base are now in place before the metal frame goes up.

It is hoped the bandstand will be finished by mid-July, in time for Leysdown summer carnival on July 25.

Talent shows are traditionally held at The Spinney as part of the festivities.

Leysdown Village Hall Committee in Wing Road, are working on the project and Leysdown Parish Council, has put forward £30,000 towards the cost.

Grants and donations from businesses will make up the remainder of the £40,000 price.

As well as being an eye-catching platform for stage-hungry performers, the bandstand will serve as a lasting tribute to British servicemen who gave their lives in the First World War.

Poppies will decorate the roof of the finished building to signify the conflict’s 100th anniversary.

Evelyn Howell, chairman of the village hall committee, which meets at the village hall, said: “We would like to thank Ian Dewey, the instruction officer at Standford Hill, and the inmates at the prison and all the Carillion volunteers for their hard work.

“It will be a place for acts to showcase their talents.”
