Police were called to the bridge just after 3.45pm.
Traffic built up as motorists were diverted via the Kingsferry Bridge.
It came as officers were earlier sent to the nearby A249 at Bobbing where a lorry had shed its load.
It happened on the Sheppey-bound side at about 12.45pm.
Road safety officers worked with police to get it cleared more than an hour later.
