Isle of Sheppey bridge shut in both directions following multi-car crash

A man was cut free from his car following a two-car crash close to the old Isle of Sheppey bridge.

The Kingsferry Bridge has been shut in both directions following the collision at 2.50pm.

The accident took place on the old Sheppey Way, Sittingbourne-bound close to the junction with Ferry Road.

Firefighters used hydraulic equipment to cut the roof off one car to gain access to the driver.

He was then treated by ambulance crews, along with another patient, before both were taken to hospital.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "A man's been cut free from wreckage by firefighters using hydraulic rescue equipment after his vehicle was involved in a collision with another car on the old Sheppey Way, Sittingbourne-bound.

"Crews removed the roof to create space for paramedics to assess the casualty before assisting to move him to a waiting ambulance."

A spokesman for the force added: "Kent Police was called at around 2.50pm on Sunday, September 1 regarding a collision involving two cars on Sheppey Way, Sheerness near the junction with Ferry Road.

"Officers and the South East Coast Ambulance Service attended the scene where two people were treated for injuries.

"They were taken to a local hospital for further medical attention."
