Three-day resurfacing works on a “tiny bit” of a coastal park’s car park has left visitors questioning why the whole area wasn’t repaired.
Swale Council spent part of last week resurfacing the entrance into Barton’s Point’s main car park on Sheppey.
The whole car park was closed from Wednesday, November 15, until Friday, November 17 as part of the authority's ongoing efforts to improve the coastal park with its Parks Levelling Up Fund.
Pictures of the improvements show a number of water-filled potholes by the car park’s gates filled and resurfaced but many more puddles and potholes can still be seen covering the rest of the site in the distance.
However, after announcing its reopening on social media the local authority was met with backlash.
One person commented: “If they were going to fix it it makes more sense to do it all at once not just a tiny bit.”
Another said: “Where's the rest of it?! What about all the huge holes in the car park?” with someone jokingly replying: “You’ve missed a bit.”
Someone else said: “They can’t actually be serious?? Why didn't they just re-surface the whole thing?? Just doing that tiny bit seems pointless to me! Those potholes are lethal, especially in the winter.”
A Swale council spokesman explained: “Thanks to Levelling Up Parks Funding, of which we received £85 000, we have carried out improvement works to Barton’s Point coastal park.
“This includes tree planting, new benches and a chess bench, works to slow erosion of the banks, and two new bridges which greatly help with accessibility and there is more to come such as signage and wayfinding markers.
“As we carefully managed the costs of these works, we had some funding left over which we used to carry out remedial work to the worst parts of the entrance to the car park."
