Police advise Sheppey speedwatch team to stop checks due to coronavirus

A group which tries to deter speeding drivers has made the decision to hit the brakes after police coronavirus advice.
The Isle of Sheppey speedwatch team have halted activity after being advised by a top officer.
Despite being given the green light by the force, only if groups were held in a Covid secure manner, members took the decision not to continue roadside work from November 5 as it was public facing.
Assistant chief constable Claire Nix, who the group received guidance on the matter from, said: “Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Kent Police has sought to support the government in encouraging and explaining the public health restrictions and advice that have been put in place to stop the virus and save lives.
“The majority of this engagement has involved direct conversations between officers and members of the public, however, the force has also sought to give guidance to partner agencies and its support groups, such as volunteers under the Speedwatch programme.
“In March 2020, Speedwatch groups were asked to suspend their activity in line with the national lockdown. Activity then resumed in June when restrictions were eased.
“At the beginning of November, Speedwatch was again asked to suspend activity whilst the second round of national restrictions were assessed. Subsequently, and in line with national advice, Speedwatch groups were informed that they could continue their activities from 5 November in a Covid secure way.
“The work volunteer groups provide Kent Police is invaluable and that is why the force is keen to make sure that where their work can continue, it does so in line with the relevant coronavirus advice.”
Members of Minster-on-Sea’s Parish Council discussed the situation at a council meeting just over a week ago.
Documents from the meeting published on its website said: “Bearing this in mind, Minster’s voluntary Speedwatch group will not be carrying out Speedwatch sessions until further notice.”
No police representatives were at the parish council meeting to discuss the matter or help the group reach its decision.
