A woman has launched an online petition calling for a speed camera after the second crash in two weeks on the same stretch of road.

Part of Marine Parade near Barton’s Point Coastal Park on Sheppey was closed for several hours this morning after a collision between a white Audi and a silver Peugeot. It has since been re-opened.

Although the circumstances around the accident haven’t been established, Dolley White has now started a petition on Change.org calling for speed cameras on the road, which has a 40mph limit.

She said: “For us, the Island residents, the Shingle Bank and Barton's Point is not just an area - it's our home.

“However, it is also an accident blackspot.

“Too many of our neighbors and friends have been hurt or put in danger because of this.

“The lack of a full-time speed camera isn't just inconvenient - it's life-threatening.

“The speed limit may be clear to locals, but it is often ignored or overshot by unaware drivers.

“Installing a permanent speed camera could change this scenario.

“We urge Kent County Council to install a permanent speed camera in front of the Shingle Bank and Barton's Point.”

More than 100 people have already signed the petition.

I have never known so many accidents at one spot

Today’s crash was a hot issue on social media today, with several people remarking on the length of the skid marks left by the crash vehicles.

Vonnie Fazza said: “I walked back from Barton’s Point yesterday with a baby in a buggy on the pavement and I didn’t feel safe!

“Vehicles were overtaking other vehicles when they were making one car length’s difference - overtaking in both directions. It was like Wacky Races!”

Rita French said: “Something needs to be done as I have lived on the Island all my life and have never known so many accidents at one spot.”

Kent Police said: “We were called at 11.07am to a collision involving two cars in Marine Parade, Barton's Point, Sheerness.

“Officers and paramedics attended the scene where three people reported minor injuries and arrangements were made to recover the vehicles.”
