This is the moment a walker was pulled from mud in a dramatic rescue operation.

Two fire engines, a fire truck, and two ambulance incident response vans headed to the cliffs at Warden Bay on the Isle of Sheppey, after ramblers got stuck.

The pair were passed into the care of the ambulance service to be checked over before making their own way home.

One witness said: "Dozens of emergency service personnel involved - took a heroic and sustained effort to free them from the mud on the cliffs

"Every year people who don’t know about local conditions or properties of wet London Clay get stuck in mud in the cliffs. Bitterly cold wind too. Poor rescuers as well with sea frets."

HM Coastguard received a 999 call just before 12:50pm after two people got stuck in the mud near Leysdown Beach.

One person got stuck while the other attempted to help and became stuck themselves.

Sheppey and Herne Bay coastguard rescue teams were sent along with Sheerness lifeboat, South East Ambulance Service, Kent Fire and Rescue Service and Kent Police.

Specialist coastguard mud rescue technicians were able to recover both people to safety with assistance from the ambulance’s Hazardous Area Response Team and Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

Rebecca McKeown, Maritime Operations Officer for HM Coastguard said: "It must have been frightening for the pair, one of which was stuck up to their waist in mud, although cold and shocked thankfully the pair were otherwise well and able to make their own way home.

"If you do see someone in difficulty in the mud, please call 999 and ask for the coastguard, don’t try to rescue them as you may get stuck yourself, like one of the pair today.

"If you find yourself stuck in the mud, try to spread your weight as much as possible and call for help immediately. Remember, if you live by the coast and take exercise there in line with the current Covid-19 restrictions please check the weather and tides before you head out and take a mobile phone so you can call for help if the worst should happen."

Last night the coastguard was called to rescue a jet-skier from deep mud after getting stuck in Herne Bay harbour.

Crews helped free the trapped pleasure seeker near to a launch ramp, before they were called out to Reculver for a separate incident.
