A club has benefitted by more than £1,000 thanks to a charity set up to support Island children.

The Dannyboy Trust (DBT) has donated £1,250 to Sheerness County Youth Centre in Broadway.

It lost its Kent County Council funding last year but a registered charity was formed, Sheerness Youth, to continue its running.

On Thursday, representatives from the DBT, which was set up in memory of Warden Bay soldier Daniel Holkham, who died while on duty in Afghanistan in 2010, went to present a cheque to the club.

It will be spent on arts and crafts equipment, table tennis bats and balls, a microphone, cues for the pool table and gifts for the reward cabinet.

There are around 68 members aged 13 to 18 signed up the club at the moment who will benefit from the donation.

Senior youth worker and trustee Ray Featherstone said this was the most money received since taking over the club.

He said. “We are in a situation where we are trying to survive and we appreciate any donations so it was very good of them to think of us.

“We are still asking for donations because we can just about pay the bills but we haven’t enough really to buy things for the young people.”
