A SHEERNESS man who plunged to his death at Sheppey Leisure Centre has been named as 41-year-old Ian Shipman.
The body of Mr Shipman, of James Street, was discovered on Sunday afternoon at a construction site where the £1 million Sheppey Healthy Living Centre extension is being added to the leisure centre off Royal Road. It is believed a passer-by found the body.
A Health and Safety Executive inspector is investigating the incident. Detectives think that Mr Shipman, a bachelor who was unemployed, got onto the construction site while it was shut for the weekend.
He is believed to have climbed on to two metal containers, slipped and then fallen. Wooden boarding fell on to him, trapping him.
A post mortem found that Mr Shipman died from a crushed neck. An inquest has been opened and adjourned.
