Delamark residents battle on
11:27, 04 February 2003
SOME of the most stoic of flood victims lived in Delamark Road, Sheerness.
They got on with the business of mopping up in 1953 because they were used to it on a lesser scale.
Sea water regularly seeped into their homes at high tide and into the Mile Town School. Sandbags outside the doors were a familiar sight, but they were no defence against the might of the sea this time.
Typically, when the sea wall was breached in 1978, they were flooded again. It was heart-breaking. But, once they'd dried out, with typical good humour they commemorated the event with a party.
All the Delamark and Royal Road people got together and prepared a lavish spread of English and West Indian food in the school house. They even had a steel band supplying the music.
