KENT Police are appealing for witnesses after a man collapsed and died at the wheel of his car.

The man was driving a green Ford Mondeo which collided with a blue Mitsubishi and then a metal bollard at the traffic lights in Sheerness High Street, near the junction with Bridge Road.

The man, aged 70 and from Sheerness, was taken to Gillingham's Medway Maritime Hospital where he was pronounced dead. It is believed he may have suffered a heart attack or stroke.

A blue Vauxhall Cavalier, at the front of the queue for the lights, was also damaged in the incident.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the pensioner on the pavement shortly after 10.30am on Monday. The high street was closed until the afternoon while specialist officers investigated.

* Swale Police are asking witnesses to contact the Serious Crash Investigation Unit on 01622 600970.
