Work is under way to build an extension at Queenborough primary, ending a six-year wait for new classrooms.

Land next to the school in Edward Road is being developed.

As well as four early years classrooms, there will also be new toilets, a TA room, an 80sq m hall and the outdoor play area has also been redesigned and will be increased to compensate for the loss of ground.

The school became an “all-through primary school” – reception to Year 6 – when the schools on the Island changed from a three-tier to two-tier system in 2009.

Due to the extra year groups, some of the children had to be taught in mobile classrooms.

They will be transferred over to the new space once work is completed.

Head teacher Barbara Conroy said the project is a modular build – with prefabricated sections being simply slotted together – so she is impressed with how fast everything is taking shape.

She said: “From the beginning to the end of the week we now have a new building which is quite amazing.

“Things will progress very quickly so it’s very exciting.

“It’s a very exciting time and we are looking forward to replacing the mobiles and having nice, new classrooms.”

She added there will be no additional pupils so the work will have no impact to traffic.

It is hoped the work will be completed by the end of April, however, this is dependent on the weather, and the buildings could be ready for the children by May.
