Fire crews tackle huge Sheppey blaze
08:10, 31 August 2013
Sheppey farmers Burden Bros have been left counting the cost after fire ripped through a barn destroying 3,000 tonnes of bailed hay.
Firefighters could remain at the scene of the massive blaze at Old Rides Farm in Leysdown Road, Eastchurch for the rest of the weekend.
Speaking this morning, Alex Burden said the cost could be as much as £200,000 and fire crews are likely to be there "for days" damping down.
Mr Burden, who also owns the Ferry House Inn at nearby Harty, said he was at the pub when called at 10pm last night (Friday) to be told of the incident.
He added that it was too early to say how the fire had started.
Three engines are currently at the farm and a fire break has been established to protect nearby buildings housing machinery.
Ward councillor John Morris, who lives in the village, says there is a strong smoke smell and a plume can be seen billowing into the air.
People across the Swale in Whitstable and along the A249 near Sittingbourne have also reported seeing the smoke.
A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said no one had been injured and the cause of the fire will be investigated.
