A large grass fire sparked by a model airshow reignited today – four days after it first went up in flames.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to Barton's Point Coastal Park on the Isle of Sheppey this afternoon.

Two fire engines were in attendance. Crews used breathing apparatus, hose-reel jets and beaters to put out the flames.

A spokesman for KFRS warned: "Those living or working near the area in Marine Parade, Sheerness, have been advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke coming from the fire."

The fire was reported at 12.30pm today and was out by just after 2pm.

The spokesman said: "Firefighting activity is now complete at Barton's Point Coastal Park."

It is believed the fire started accidentally after a deep-seated pocket of fire reignited following Saturday's blaze.

Crews had been at the site on Monday dampening it down as it is understood the marshy ground is rich in peat.

KFRS said: "The earlier advice to close windows and doors is no longer in place.

"Thank you for your patience while crews worked at the scene.

"Please share this update with any loved ones in the affected area who might not have access to social media."

There were no reports of injuries.

The public open space was ravaged by flames on Saturday night when sparks from a model aeroplane show's fireworks finale set fire to tinder dry grass.

There has also been a recent spate of fires on the Island which was without water for two days last week when the pipe supplying it with water burst.

Southern Water is facing a compensation bill that could run into seven figures.
