A husband and wife who have run their fish and chip shop for more than two decades have decided it's time to call it a day.

Narinder Kaur Lally and Manjinder Singh Lally are selling the lease for Sheerness Fish Bar for £80,000 after being based at 203 Sheerness High Street for 23 years.

They lived above the chippy for the first 11 years after they moved from Strood in 1999, before moving to Minster where they continue to live.

They spent a year getting the shop ready before opening in 2000.

Manjinder, 69, said he had decided to sell up because he did not want the “headache” of introducing a delivery service.

He added: “We have both worked very hard and now have enough pension money to retire.

“We will be spending our time going on holidays.”

The pair have been keeping hungry customers fed six days a week and in that time have only ever taken Sundays off and an annual two-week Christmas break.

Despite being best known for its fish and chips the Lallys have offered customers a wide range of fast food including chicken and chips, kebabs, fritters, burgers and, of course, battered sausages.

Narinder, 64, said her customers have told her that they don’t want them to leave.

She added: “The best thing about working here has been our customers who are all different.

“People love us being here so much that they have told us that we aren’t allowed to go away.”

Customers took to social media to wish the couple well in their retirement.

One said he had been a customer since he was six years old. “I’m 30 now and it will be sad to see them go," he added.

Another called the Lallys “Legends of the Island”.
