It’s estimated more than 600 runners and walkers took to the streets and promenades of Sheppey for the Paul Trigwell Island Run on Sunday.
This year’s race had a 1940s fancy dress theme to coincide with the 70th anniversary of VE Day.
It meant a number of entrants arrived at the starting line in various states of wartime attire.
As is traditional, the 10-mile walkers were the first to set off from Leysdown for Sheerness at 10am, followed by the runners two hours later.
Those taking part in the shorter, two-mile distance went under starter’s orders at Minster Leas opposite the Beach pub.
The weather remained bright, breezy and pleasantly warm for competitors, who were met by a large crowd of supporters at the finish line at Beachfields Park in Sheerness.
Fiona Trigwell, wife of former St George’s primary teacher, Paul Trigwell, in whose memory the race is run, said the weekend’s proceeds are still being counted.
All monies will be donated to youth-based Island causes and she remains hopeful this year’s funds will top £10,000.
She said: “We’ll know in the next five or six weeks how much money was raised.
“It was an absolutely brilliant day which had outstanding support from the community.
“It’s become a real family and friends event with people making a whole day of it, getting together and having barbecues and the like, which is amazing.”
Mrs Trigwell said following the race, a buffet was held at the Beach Hotel as a thank-you to the run’s volunteer marshals.
She added: “Planning for next year’s event will start in the next couple of months.
“It’s going to be special as it’ll be our 10th.”
An awards ceremony will be held on Friday, June 19 where entrants who have paid sponsorship money will receive a medal.
It takes place from 7pm at the Oasis Isle of Sheppey Academy’s west site in Marine Parade, Sheerness.
