Police were called to HMP Swaleside in Brabazon Road, Eastchurch, at 7pm last Wednesday.

Two men have been charged with murder in connection with the incident.

Jason George Gomez, 44, and Paul Wadkin, 32, were remanded in custody and appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Friday via video link.

They are due to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on April 17.

Swaleside is a category B jail and is a main centre prison for inmates in the first stage of their life sentence.

It also accepts criminals who are in the second stage of their life sentence, are serving four years or more, or have at least 18 months left to serve.

A source inside the prison, who did not want to be named, said: “The death is being treated as murder and some staff didn’t leave the site until after midnight.”

They added it happened “on the wing with inmates with personality disorders and the like”.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “A HMP Swaleside prisoner was treated by staff and paramedics on the evening of Wednesday, March 25.”
