The organisers of the Sheerness Christmas lights display hope to have them switched on in time for tomorrow's (Saturday, December 12) lantern parade.

Although the town’s lights would usually be up by now, a list of problems has caused setbacks.

Organisers said bad weather prevented them being put up on time, and when they moved the lights from where they were stored, they found some of them were damaged.

But hard work by the committee has meant all is not lost and by the time the street is filled with people for the lantern parade, the sky should also be lit up with the town’s lights display.

Lights will be put up along the High Street, in Broadway, and hopefully around the Clock Tower if scaffolding is removed in time.

Sheila Smith, secretary and treasurer of Sheerness Traders’ Association, said: “We are trying our best and we want the lights finished for the lantern parade this weekend.

“We need support for next year because we have got to get new lights.

“We are going to arrange a meeting to sort something out for next year – we should all work together.

“We would like to thank everybody who has helped.”
