Motorists were diverted away from a section of the A249 following a major accident.
A Toyota and Mercedes collided on the Maidstone-bound carriageway near the Stockbury roundabout just after 4pm.
Two crews from Medway and Sheppey fire stations attended, where they used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the woman driver of one of the vehicles.
Three ambulances and paramedic cars, as well as a number of police cars were also at the scene.
Five others, including the two drivers and one nine-year-old child, were treated at the scene and three of them were transferred to Medway Maritime Hospital.
No one is thought to be seriously injured.
The road between the area and the Key Street roundabout for the A2 and Sittingbourne town centre was closed until 5.43pm.
