A man who attacked someone with a knife after they made a joke has been jailed for nearly two years.

Julian Aldis narrowly missed the victim's eye when he lunged at him with a kitchen knife following a falling out at a Sheerness home in December.

On December 19, the victim, a man in his 40s, visited a home in Coronation Road to meet a friend.

However, his friend wasn't in so he let himself in and waited on the upstairs landing at the property which Aldis also lived at.

The pair had a conversation where the victim made a joke, which Aldis took offence too.

The 24-year-old went downstairs and returned 30 seconds later with a knife, where he accused the victim of making fun of him and attacked him.

A struggle commenced and the Aldis struck the man around the head with the blade, causing a wound above his eyebrow.

Eventually the knife fell to the floor and the victim managed to put his foot on it, before Aldis unsuccessfully tried to get it back.

In his attempts to retrieve the blade he broke the handle off and fled the scene. The handle was later found by officers in Aldis' room.

After being charged Aldis admitted actual bodily harm and was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Maidstone Crown Court on Wednesday.

In addition to the 18 months, he activated a 120-day suspended sentence for an unrelated matter. This prison term will be served consecutively.

Police constable Beth Brimmicombe-Wood, the investigating officer for the case, said: "Aldis’ willingness to use a knife on another member of the public clearly shows him to be a dangerous offender.

"Although the injuries the victim sustained were, thankfully, relatively minor he could easily have sustained a fatal or life changing wound.

"There is never a good reason to use a knife on another member of the public and I am pleased that the judge has enforced a custodial sentence."
