Three mums have saved the day by organising a Year 6 prom for their children at a school in Sheppey.

The trio have spent hundreds of pounds their own money and dozens of hours planning and putting together the event, for pupils from West Minster Primary in Sheerness.

Youngsters were left upset when the school, in St George’s Avenue, cancelled its usual Year 6 prom due to Covid-19.

But not taking no for an answer, Samantha Sullivan, Gemma Rodgers and Katie Rodgers, who are all friends, decided to arrange their own event to be held at the Sheerness Co-op club near the school on tonight.

Samantha, of Vincent Gardens, Sheerness, explained the friends will be asking for £5 each for entry to make some of the money back they’ve put into it.

The 37-year-old said: “We’ve spent around £500 on the whole thing so far, but it will all be worth it.

“We have around 40 people coming after the school said they weren’t doing one. My daughter said it was a real shame it wasn’t going ahead so we decided to host our own.

“It’s been a really tough last year for all of them as they’ve been split up as a year and haven’t seen a lot of their friends. So this is a nice way of them to be able to say goodbye to each other.”

Samantha, who has been helped by Gemma and Katie who own the Fat Boys Burger Van outside the club, says they are following guidance from Public Health England and will require the youngsters to sit in tables of six and accompanying adults will have to wear a mask.

She added: “So many parents have messaged us or come up to us and said thank you and how excited their children are.

“A lot of them have got dresses or tuxedos as well as some arriving in limos or Range Rovers.

“I’m really glad I’ve done it as it’s a good way for the children to still have their special day.”
