The Isle of Sheppey has a new bridge. A £3 million link from the docks to the site of the former Sheerness Steel Mill was craned into place last night.

The giant steel spans now straddle the Brielle Way at Blue Town. The main A249 into Sheerness was closed between 8pm and 6am this morning to allow engineers to carry out the delicate manoeuvre.

The 230-metre long bridge is part of a £50 million investment by Peel Ports. It is 6.5-metre high and is being built by John Sisk.

Peel Ports has asked residents to come up with names for the bridge.

People can now vote for their favourite out of a shortlist of three picked from more than 200 suggestions.

The three are:

Wildfire Bridge - in memory of the Royal Navy’s land-based HMS Wildfire unit which was stationed on Sheppey during the Second World War.

Samuel Pepys Bridge - after the 17 century diarist Samuel Pepys who was a regular visitor to Sheerness Docks while it was being built.

Blue Town Bridge and Bridgey McBridgeface did not make it to the shortlist.
