Part of the town has been brightened up ahead of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations after a landmark was given a paint job.

Thanks to Sheerness Enhancement Association for Leisure (SEAL), the clock tower has been painted in patriotic colours of red, white and blue.

Times Guardian readers voted for the new scheme, which cost £7,500 and was done by contractors Moat and Harlow.

SEAL has also put up jubilee bunting around the landmark and is in the process of organising some flowers to put in the planters and hanging baskets.

It was paid for by Swale council and grants from Cllrs John Morris, Lesley Ingham, June Garrad, Mark Ellen and Ken Pugh. The new-look clock tower was revealed on Friday.

SEAL treasurer Chris Foulds said: “I’m really pleased with how it’s gone and we think it looks great.

“I would like to thank everyone that voted, all the councillors who have given us grants, Swale council and the contractors, who were very professional.

“Thanks also to Tim Pierpoint of Chainstore, who has donated a lot of flowers.”

Mr Foulds said he would also like to ask people not to fly-post on the tower as it will rip the paint off.
