THE story of the enigmatic Piano Man could be retold on television.

A drama-documentary on the man who became one of the world’s most famous missing persons could be broadcast this time next year.

BBC programme makers have started work on a script telling the tale of the unidentified man who was found wandering on a Sheppey beach and then spent three months in North Kent before he was finally named as German Andreas Grassl.

Gemma Moses, a BBC assistant producer, said: “He certainly captured the public’s imagination and he was an enigma. We think people may be very interested in this subject.”

Filming could take place over a couple of months during the summer and locations earmarked are the hospital, Minster beach where he was first found and his home village in Bavaria.

The idea for the programme came from David Jackson, the head of department for BBC Music in Wales.

Miss Moses said: “We were interested because of the music angle - when he was in hospital he became known as Piano Man for his playing skills. But the programme will cover all aspects of the story.”

Once the script is finished and approved, BBC London will be approached to commission the project.

Only once that goes ahead can actors be casted, a budget approved and filming begin.
