A planning application for an Asda supermarket – which could create as many as 120 jobs – has been submitted.

The £6 million project for a plot opposite Sheppey Community Hospital in Plover Road, Minster, also includes proposals for four smaller retail units, such as a cafe, dry-cleaners and florist.

A decision from Swale is due to be made in October.

Land to the rear of the supermarket, allocated for housing under the council’s Local Plan, has been earmarked for 100 homes by the same developers.

It is understood landowner Dalemarch (Sheppey) and property management firm Starnes, which are working together on the project, will lodge a separate application seeking outline permission for the properties shortly.

Asda has pledged to work with the council and Jobcentre Plus Sheerness to create a recruitment programme, job placements and apprenticeships and previously said the payroll would be in excess of £1 million a year.

The store is anticipated to be one-third of the size of one of the company’s larger supermarkets, and various energy-saving measures, including recycling excess heat from the bakery, are planned.
