Prisoner from HMP Swaleside on the Isle of Sheppey attacked

A prisoner was taken to hospital after being attacked with an improvised weapon.

The HMP Swaleside inmate was attacked at around 7.17pm yesterday.

The prisoner, who has not been named, left the category B prison on the Isle of Sheppey in an ambulance.

It has been reported he was stabbed.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “A prisoner received hospital treatment after an assault by another inmate yesterday at HMP Swaleside.

"He has since returned to the prison and the police are now investigating.”

The victim was not in a critical condition.

Police spokesman Jo Pattison said: "Kent Police was called at 7.17pm on Wednesday 10 July to reports of an assault at HMP Swaleside prison.

"A man was taken to hospital for treatment to a facial injury. The injuries are described as serious.

"Inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances."
