Pub gig supports Justice for Carl campaign fund
15:04, 20 January 2012
A gig will be held in memory of murdered Sheppey teacher Carl Davies later this month.
His parents Maria and Andy, sister Kerrie, and other family members, are expected to attend the event which will be held the Ypres Tavern, West Street, Sittingbourne, on January 28.
The fundraiser has been arranged by family friend Maria Sait.
The entertainment, which starts at 8pm, will include live music by Remedy and a raffle. Justice for Carl wristbands will also be available to buy.
The 33-year-old’s aunt Tracy Hudson, from Minster, created the blue and white bands to raise money to help the family with a prosecution on the south Indian Ocean island where the ex-Royal Marine was killed.
It was initially reported that Mr Davies, of Harrier Drive, Sittingbourne, died on November 9, after falling into a ravine.
But a second post-mortem examination found he had been stabbed in the stomach and beaten around the head.
More than 25 businesses across Sittingbourne and Sheppey areselling the bands, which cost £2 each.
Since launching them in December, the married mother of three has ordered 7,500 silicone bands.
If the money from the sale of the bands is not required for legal costs it will be divided between three charities that the ex-Isle of Sheppey Academy teacher supported – MS Society, Help for Heroes and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Scheme.
Mrs Hudson said: “The response has been fantastic. I’ve even had a hairdressers in Chatham asking for them.”
She is also in the process of planning a summer ball. She added: “We are looking for a venue in Sittingbourne to hold the ball so if anyone can offer a place free of charge or at a reduced rate we would be interested in hearing from them.
“They can make contact via the Justice for Carl Facebook group.”
- Wristbands can be bought from Costcutter, Sheerness; Balloonatic, Sheerness; Oasis Plumbing, Sheerness; The Shurland Hotel, Eastchurch; Old House at Home, Queenborough; Angels, Sheerness; and Images, Sheerness.
- They can also be purchased from eBay for 99p plus £1.76 for postage and packaging. Just type Justice for Carl in the search engine.
Students who knew Mr Davies are putting on a show to raise money for the campaign.
The group of 10 A-level performing arts pupils have put together a production, called Centre Stage Invites You To Contemporary Avenue, at the Isle of Sheppey Academy’s west site in Sheerness.
The show is about contemporary theatre and will include a selection of different “mini-plays” some which will be serious, some funny and some based on real-life stories.
One of the students taking part, Kirsty Sawyer, 17, said: “Mr Davies was always there for anyone that needed him.
“He was really, really nice. We really hope this will be a huge success as this is a cause that is close to all of our hearts. It’s our way of giving something back to him.”
Entry to the show will be free and anyone is welcome to go along.
Donations will be welcome on the door and refreshments will be on sale as well as Justice for Carl Davies wristbands.
The show will take place in Brabazon Hall at the academy’s west site in Jefferson Road, Sheerness, on Thursday, February 2, from 7pm to 8.30pm.
