A Sheppey pub is offering a free turkey dinner for Island pensioners who would otherwise be on their own on Christmas Day.

Caroline Ashworth, who runs The Beach Hotel in Seaside Avenue, Minster, with her husband Duane said she hates the thought of people being alone at this time of year.

She was inspired to do something after seeing an advert for communitychristmas.org.uk on a wrapper from a Cornish pasty her hubby was eating.

The website lets people register to provide companionship to older folk on December 25.

Mrs Ashworth registered her details and is encouraging others across Kent to do so.

She said: “Some people can’t afford the heating at Christmas and they might be sitting at home in the cold and can’t afford Christmas.

The 34-year-old said she has wanted to help others in the festive period since she was a little girl.

She said: “I grew up in London and I remember my mum’s friend said she volunteered at a homeless shelter and how good she felt afterwards.

“Ever since I heard that I always wanted to do something but when I grew up and moved away from London I don’t really know any homeless places.

“Life kind of gets in the way but when I saw that advert I though, why not just hold our own event. Someone needs to do something, why not us.”

Anyone who would like to go along to the meal, on Christmas Day from 4pm to 6pm, and can make their own way is asked to call ahead before Wednesday on 01795 872364 to give a rough idea of how much food needs to be provided.
