A seaside pub has removed its dog bowls following reports of antifreeze being poured into pets’ drinking water.
The Beach Bar and Restaurant, in Minster on Sheppey, took the step after owners said their animals had fallen ill after using public bowls nearby.
A statement posted to the eatery’s Facebook page said: “Several dogs have been poisoned by antifreeze poured into dog bowls by toilet blocks on Minster Beach, this info has been given to us by dog owners.
“We had to remove our bowls from outside the pub. Please ask for fresh water from our bar staff only and only accept dog treats from our bar staff.”
The manager of the pub explained she took the precaution after being warned by people and dog walkers living nearby. She said: “It is better to be safe than sorry.”
Swale council has confirmed it is aware of the situation.
A spokesman said: “We’re aware of the social media post and would urge anyone affected to report the matter to the police to investigate. We’d always encourage dog owners to be cautious about letting their pets drink from public bowls.”
A spokesman for the police said the force is unaware of any reports being made of such incidents in the area.
The Beach Bar’s post has been shared more than 1,000 times with dog owners sharing their worry and horror in the comment section.
One person said: “What possible pleasure do these sadistic people get from poisoning a defenceless animal?”
Another added: “This is terrible, what sort of person would do such a thing.”
A woman also commented: “It’s so worrying. Don’t understand this world sometimes.”
While another said: “This is simply monstrous if true.”
