Youngsters held a placard protest over dangerous parking outside their school.

Staff and about 20 Year 6 children from Halfway Primary wore hi-viz jackets and waved banners to deter drivers from waiting on zig-zag lines at the Southdown Road site’s entrance.

Monday afternoon’s mini-demonstration followed a report in last month’s STG in which Queenborough mum Hayley Kingsnorth said her eight-year-old daughter Mia was almost hit by a car as she crossed the road outside the school with her dad.

Mrs Kingsnorth said the near-accident was caused by a plethora of parents’ vehicles stopped on yellow “no parking” signs.

Halfway Primary’s head teacher Ryan Driver said he hoped the pupils’ action would force drivers to alter their picking-up and dropping-off habits.

He said: “The protest went really well, and yesterday morning, the parking issue was not as big a problem as it had been.

“We just feel there’s an accident waiting to happen and we’re trying to promote the idea that people shouldn’t be parking on zig-zag lines outside the school.”

Mr Driver said there was also a health and safety aspect. He said: “If we had to call the fire service at school closing time, a fire engine would have great difficulty in getting through.

“We hope what we did will have some impact.

”Most parents have been very supportive and the protest brought a smile to their faces.

“The only downside is a few drives were blocked on Tuesday morning by parents which is really inconvenient to residents.”
