A group of men and youths are said to have rescued a man who jumped into the sea and fell unconscious.

Steve Wolfe was running along the front in Sheerness at around 6pm with Lee Allen when they saw some youths appearing to struggle with something in the water.

Mr Wolfe said: "We saw a couple of young boys in the sea, I believe they were fishing, but it looked like they were struggling to keep something afloat.

"Lee and I ran over to help and realised it was a man.

"I'm a trained first aider. We managed to get him out the water and put him in the recovery position. We compressed his chest, as he had ingested a lot of water, and he was unconscious."

It it believed the man is in his 50s and had jumped from a jetty, into the water about 50 metres from the shore.

Mr Wolfe added: "The boys said he looked as if he was in trouble as soon as he got in the water, and while they tried to keep him afloat they couldn't lift him back up and onto the jetty.

"A couple of Polish guys came along, and together we all managed to pull him out."

A fire engine and two ambulances attended the scene. Emergency services have been contacted for a comment.
