A Sheppey beach kiosk could be demolished if a new lease isn’t agreed.

Swale council is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) to manage and maintain the building in Shellness Road, Leysdown.

A lease of up to 20 years is being offered.

The council-owned building, which includes public toilets, is in a poor condition and will need repairs and improvements.

The existing drains and cesspool are also in need of repair and these will be carried out by the council before a new tenant moves in.

The council is keen for the building to be brought back into use to attract more visitors to the area all year round but, in particular, during the summer season.

A spokesman said: “The lease for the kiosk has come to an end, so we see this as an exciting opportunity for the right concession to add value to the area for visitors and residents.”

Ideas are sought on what events or activities could be organised, in addition to the offer of refreshments.

It is expected the successful applicant will open the building to the public for as much of the year as possible – but as a minimum between April and September – and during that time will also open and maintain the public toilets.

Any costs associated with managing and maintaining the public toilets, including cesspool emptying and water charges, will be reimbursed to the tenant by the council by deducting them from the rent payable for the kiosk.

The reason for the EOI is that the lease has ended.

The current tenant can express an interest if they want but if no viable business plans are submitted, the council would have to look at what other options there are, which could, as a last resort, include demolition.

EOIs need to be submitted by noon on Monday, June 17.
