A charity which provides lifelong support to former and serving servicemen and their relatives has provided an ex-soldier with a mobility scooter.

Members of the Soldiers’, Sailors’, Airmen and Families’ Association (SSAFA) on Sheppey raised the £2,000 for the motorised vehicle through grants from the Army Benevolent Fund, the Royal British Legion and the Grenadier Guards.

It has been given to former Grenadier Guardsman Peter Hinds, 57, of Manor Road, Rushenden, whose wife got in touch with the organisation after he suffered two strokes.

Kevin Edwards, a volunteer with SSAFA who helped to raise the funds, said: “There are lots of people in Swale who don’t know about us who need our help. It’s a fantastic organisation.

He added the group had recently been out to repair the window of a woman in Sheerness whose husband had served in the Second World War.
