A group set up to try to improve the fortunes of the town centre is holding a public meeting to get feedback and ideas.

Sheerness Town Team is aiming to enlist as much support as possible from residents throughout 2014.

It has come under fire for its project to close off the lower part of the High Street in a bid to boost trade as some people are unhappy about the changes this has meant to the bus routes.

A spokesman said it appreciates not everybody backs the scheme and it is negotiating with Kent Highways about the possibility of lifting the closure temporarily.

However, it is a trial period and the group is encouraging people to get in touch with their views.

Town Team chairman Pete Giffen said: “I’m sure we all want the same thing, which is to add life and colour to Sheerness.

“We want all the groups, associations, clubs and businesses out there to come forward with ideas for events or projects. One of the main purposes of the Saturday road closure was to open up the town for events, so we’d love to hear from the community.”

The group already has a number of plans in the pipeline, including a St George’s Parade and a May Day Parade and a commemoration for the First World War centenary. It is keen to hear other ideas Islanders have for bringing people together.

The meeting will take place at Sheppey Leisure Complex, off Royal Road, Sheerness, on Thursday, February 27, at a time to be confirmed.
