Shopkeepers were cleaning up this morning after two flower beds were trashed by vandals.
Alec Smith, who runs the Cuddles ‘n’ Bubbles pet shop in Sheerness Broadway, said: “It’s unbelievable. I can’t understand why anyone would do this. Every single plant was ripped out. I just don’t see the point of it.
“We are trying to make Sheerness look nice for visitors and shoppers and then this happens.”
He was out this morning replanting the two flower planters outside his shop.
Sheerness Town Team in association with Stones Nursery provides and looks after the flowers in nine planters in the town centre and the flower baskets on lampposts.
Vice-chairman Brian Spoor, who voluntarily tends the plants with Town Team colleague Bob McCall, fumed: “This makes me so angry. It was just mindless vandalism. But we will not be beaten.”
Police are understood to be studying CCTV footage taken from the town’s security cameras.
Police said they were called to a disturbance in Sheerness Broadway at 5.11am.
A spokesman said: "Officers arrested one man on suspicion of criminal damage. The man was subsequently taken to a local hospital as a precaution."
