New public toilets are to be built on the Isle of Sheppey so tourists don't have to traipse too far.

Swale council is spending more than a penny - £120,000 to be precise - on two public loos in Minster Leas.

It is part of a £200,000 investment by Swale council to improve public conveniences across the borough.

Money will also be spent refurbishing toilets at The Spinney, Leysdown, and Faversham's Central Car Park. Both will have £40,000 spent on them.

Council leader Cllr Roger Truelove said: “This is just the start of a wider programme to refurbish and install better toilet facilities around the borough.”

Cllr Tim Valentine, cabinet member for environment, said: "We are pleased to allocate this money to improve public conveniences in these highly-used areas."

Work on building the new toilet block at the bottom of Seaside Avenue, Minster, near the beach huts and in front of the Little Oyster care home, will go out to tender this month.

They will be in addition to the block at the White House restaurant at the other end of The Leas.

Cllr Valentine said: "We have listened to visitors who said the current toilet block in The Broadway was too far away from amenities at the Seaside Avenue end of The Leas. So the new toilets will be closer to the car park and beach huts."

The new block will have two unisex cubicles, a disabled toilet and a grass roof to disguise it from overlooking houses. It will be open all year round.

It has not yet been decided exactly where the toilets will go.

Work to refurbish the other two sites should be completed this spring.
