Shayne Burgess favourite to win the Sheppey Darts Classic
16:37, 22 May 2013
Shayne Burgess will be the man to beat again this year during the 11th Sheppey Darts Classic.
The 2012 champion is back on the Island hoping to emulate his success during last year’s competition.
Burgess is one of a handful of professionals aiming to claim a large share of the £7,000 prize fund and also gain valuable BDO ranking points.
Lionel Sams and former World Masters champion Peter Evison are also competing.
Organisers have seen an upturn in entrants but are still short of sponsors.
Tony Cox, one of the Classic organisers, said: “We’ve had quite a few more entrants but are still desperate for sponsors.”
And while the entrance levels have increased, Island participation is still down, with hopes of a first Sheppey winner looking slim.
“Shayne is the one to beat and he is playing brilliantly at the moment, “ said Mr Cox. “Unfortunately some of the top players on the Island who could challenge him just haven’t entered.”
Doors are open at Merlins from 9am on Saturday and Sunday, with action starting at 11am on both days. Entrance is £2 to watch, while players can enter on the day.
