A new 24/7 gym that could fill the final vacant unit in a leisure quarter has been labelled “great” for the town.

Infinity Fitness has submitted a planning application to open a branch at Bourne Place, in Sittingbourne.

Units 1 and 2, next to Nandos and underneath The Light cinema, are being earmarked for the gym which has branches in Kings Hill and Margate.

It is set to be around 506 sq m and would make the Sittingbourne site Infinity Fitness’ third gym in the UK.

A spokesman for the company said: “We will have a parking space provision of over 300 which will be available to members so they never have to worry regarding parking spaces.

“We will be fitting the site out will a huge selection of Hammer strength equipment, including a vast amount of plate-loaded machines and free weights.

“We are confident that we will be offering one of the best-equipped gyms in Sittingbourne.”

He added that Infinity Fitness hopes to open in June, subject to the planning permission being granted.

The gym would be the latest franchise to come as part of the multi-million pound Spirit of Sittingbourne scheme which has seen a transformation of the town centre.

Cllr Monique Bonney, chairman of Swale council’s regeneration and property committee, said: “The applicants need to go through the hurdle of planning permission but I think this will be great for Sittingbourne.

“It will complete the town centre regeneration scheme and give people a choice, it is within walking distance of other shops and businesses in Sittingbourne.

“Any new occupiers who come and fill units in the town will always be welcome.”

The Sentado Lounge and a Travelodge are the other occupants of the complex’s units.

Pizza Express and dessert chain Creams were set to open in the remaining units at Bourne Place as part of the regeneration of the town centre.

However, in 2021, it was confirmed both eateries would not be coming to the town.

The Infinity Fitness application comes just weeks after Pure Gym announced it would be coming to Sittingbourne Retail Park after Bensons for Beds closed down in December.
