Argos to close Sittingbourne town centre branch and move into nearby Sainsbury's
12:30, 28 July 2017
Argos is to close its Sittingbourne town centre branch and move into a nearby supermarket.
The firm’s new “digital store” inside Sainsbury’s in Avenue of Remembrance is due to open at the end of November.
No jobs will be lost as part of the move, as all staff will be transferred to the new shop.
The supermarket chain pledges that the new Argos “will offer thousands of popular products for immediate pickup”.
The store will also include an eBay collection point, where people can collect purchases made on the shopping website.
The move comes after Sainsbury’s acquired Home Retail Group, which owns Argos, in September last year, and is part of its strategy to help its customers shop “whenever and wherever” they want.
The supermarket will close the week before it relaunches for it to undergo a refresh with new fresh food counters. Customers will be able to buy fresh pizza, baked goods and pastries.
Sainsbury’s spokesman David Mills said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Argos and its team to our Sittingbourne supermarket.
“The new shop is great news for customers, who are looking for easier, more convenient ways to shop.
“We’re looking forward to offering them an increased range of products at great value, all under one roof.”
It is not yet known what will happen to Argos’s High Street premises once the store closes – set to be on Wednesday, November 22.
But the closure will leave a big hole at the top end of the town, where there are already a number of empty buildings, including what were once home to Mothercare and Store Twenty One.
What was Ponden Home Interiors is also currently vacant but is set to become a branch of fast food restaurant Wimpy.
There are a number of new businesses heading for the town, though, including dessert parlours Creams cafe and Kaspa’s.
Pizza Express and Wildwood are both expected to open as part of the eagerly awaited Spirit of Sittingbourne town centre regeneration plans.
Home Bargains, Iceland’s Food Warehouse and a drive-through Costa are also due to open in new units on what was the Princes Street depot.
