A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after several people were injured at a mass gathering.

An ambulance has been pictured at the junction of Portland Avenue and the air ambulance has landed nearby.

It comes as people have been told to stay indoors unless going out for a limited number of reasons, in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

It is thought about 40 motorbikes were also in the road.

One eye-witness, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: "It looks as if someone has been hit by a motorbike and the air ambulance has landed.

"There are lots of bikes in the road. They have been going mad out here."

Medics were sent to Tonge Road at about 10.40am to reports of a crash involving a motorbike.

A spokesman said a 17-year-old boy was taken to King's College Hospital in London by air ambulance with potentially serious injuries.

He added two or three others, with less serious injuries, were taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.

A police spokesman said: "Officers were called by South East Coast Ambulance Service to a report of a collision involving a 17-year-old boy and a motorcyclist in Tonge Road, Sittingbourne, at 10.42am.

"One person has been taken to a London hospital by air ambulance with injuries believed to be serious.

"Officers have arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of dangerous driving. Police remain in the area carrying out enquiries."

Paul Gambell, who lives nearby to where it happened, said: "I heard them gathering earlier this morning.

"There were about 40 motorbikes which were all there for a young lad's funeral.

"About 100 people were there and they were doing wheelies.

"I've seen a video and it looks like more than a hundred people at Bobbing crematorium. It looks more like 400 to 500."

When asked if they were made aware of a funeral, the police spokesman added: "Kent Police was made aware of funeral arrangements due to take place [today] at a crematorium in Sheppey Way, Bobbing.

"Initial enquiries suggested a significant number of people were expected to attend the ceremony to pay their respects followed by a possible procession through the local area.

"The force received notification of the funeral the evening before it was due to take place and was therefore unable to speak with those attending to encourage them to adhere to social distancing measures.

"Officers maintained a presence during the event in an effort to strike a balance between allowing those in attendance to grieve and celebrate the life they knew, while protecting the wider local community from any potential health offences.

"Those who have been identified as attending the ceremony will be contacted in due course to remind them of their personal responsibilities during the Covid-19 pandemic."

Another person living nearby, who did not want to be identified, said he heard revving of trail and motorbikes near their house at about 9am.

Swale Borough Council member for Murston, Cllr James Hall (Swale Ind), said he believed the incident was brought about by the use of a nearby bus lane linking Great Easthall with Murston.

He said: "Almost every day, bikers coming take joyrides disturbing residents enroute and drive in a horseshoe route that takes them through Murston to Oak Road and through the bus lane.

"If it had been monitored by CCTV they would have been unable or wary to take this route."
